I have a lot of friends who are declawed, and I don’t want to hurt their parents’ feelings. But as a cat who cares about my fellow companion animals and wants to help end needless suffering, I hope to try to influence you to try something else to control your cat’s scratching before you subject him to painful surgery. We all know that your cat would rather scratch on that nice rough sofa or carpet than on the scratching post you bought at the pet supplies store. But there are modern alternatives to declawing that just might work. Here is a great article about declawing, written by a veterinarian. She discusses declawing plus she gives several different resources you can try instead if you decide not to declaw. This page shows why cats need that last digit of their toes and what effects declawing can have on the cat’s body, even after the amputation is healed. Of course, I don’t want to see someone get rid of their cat due to shredded furniture or speaker fronts, and that’s why veterinarians will still do this surgery in the U.S. They know that some people even have their cats euthanized because they’re more concerned about the draperies than about their own furry companions!

Anyway, here are some products that may help break up the cycle of your kitty ripping into everything. Remember that the SoftPaws or clippers will render your cat unable to really use his claws, so be sure he stays inside all the time if you use one of those two methods. Those colored SoftPaws would be great to help dress up your kitty with a manicure in your team colors or even holiday colors in another month or so!
